A Bainbridge Island Park is lost

It is sad to see this once special little park that was mostly unknown be rendered unusable by the City Council of Bainbridge Island. The meadow is now gone. The access to the water is gone. The chance for a summer picnic is gone. It is noteworthy that all this was under the guise of environmental restoration, however rather than remove a paved parking area, it was just covered with dirt. A serious drainage and contamination problem in the making. Fortunately there are many wonderful things to do and see on Bainbridge Island that are not associated with local politics. We have just discovered a wonderful blog site that captures the spirit and beauty of Bainbridge Island. Take a look at BACKROADS OF BAINBRIDGE and enjoy!

...exploring Bainbridge Island's inner harbors

The little park in Cannery Cove is a perfect place for non-power boats. Depending on the tide, it is easy to come ashore and relax and look around at this Bainbridge Island historical site.

...a great little Bainbridge Island Park

A sweet little Bainbridge Island Park. Cannery Cove Park is a park actually on the water - on the inner part of Eagle Harbor. It is peaceful and almost like having your very own waterfront property. We love sitting on the grass watching the kayaks go by and the ducks swimming. The water is calm and sometimes when the tide is in, it can be like glass with a million reflections.

strawberries are part of Bainbridge Island History

Strawberry farming was a mainstay for many first and second-generation Japanese, who began migrating to Bainbridge in 1889. The strawberry cannery, at cannery cove, was built by the Winslow Berry Growers Association, a cooperative of Japanese-American farmers. At it's peak during the Depression, 500 - 55 gallon barrels a day of select Marshall strawberries were produced. Vessels barged the barrels of sugared berries to Seattle, where they were shipped world wide.

canoeing and kayaking Bainbridge Island

A favorite activity on Bainbridge Island is canoeing and kayaking. Eagle Harbor is ideal because it is calm and there is much to see. If you do not have your own, you can rent one at the city dock. Heading to the inner harbor is a must and a stop at Cannery Cove Park is always fun. A good place to walk around, just sit, or have a picnic.

A very special World Music event at Cannery Cove Park. We walked from downtown Winslow last evening to discover a performance of traditional Japanese music by a trio that has also appeared at Bloedel reserve. A very special intimate evening for a fortunate twenty five people.
