Strawberry farming was a mainstay for many first and second-generation Japanese, who began migrating to Bainbridge in 1889. The strawberry cannery, at cannery cove, was built by the Winslow Berry Growers Association, a cooperative of Japanese-American farmers. At it's peak during the Depression, 500 - 55 gallon barrels a day of select Marshall strawberries were produced. Vessels barged the barrels of sugared berries to Seattle, where they were shipped world wide.

canoeing and kayaking Bainbridge Island
A favorite activity on Bainbridge Island is canoeing and kayaking. Eagle Harbor is ideal because it is calm and there is much to see. If you do not have your own, you can rent one at the city dock. Heading to the inner harbor is a must and a stop at Cannery Cove Park is always fun. A good place to walk around, just sit, or have a picnic.

...pop up world music at Cannery Cove Park
A very special World Music event at Cannery Cove Park. We walked from downtown Winslow last evening to discover a performance of traditional Japanese music by a trio that has also appeared at Bloedel reserve. A very special intimate evening for a fortunate twenty five people.

Cannery Cove Park is on the Bainbridge Island waterfront trails on inner Eagle Harbor. A short walk from the ferry. It is marked as Strawberry Cannery acknowledging it's history.
